Denice in the heart of a Legacy Experience

It truly doesn't get more real than this. SO much dirt, dust, and fun!

The Legacy Experience

When I first created what I now call a Legacy Experience, I struggled to find the right words to describe it—because it’s unlike anything other photographers offer. Even friends in the industry often ask, “So what exactly do you do?” For a long time, I hesitated to explain it in detail, not because I wasn’t proud of what I had created, but because I wanted to protect it. This process was something I had built from the ground up, and I wanted to protect what made it special—so that it remained something truly unique to my clients and my vision.

Over time, I realized that keeping it quiet wasn’t helping anyone. I can’t help families capture their legacies if they don’t know this experience exists, so it was time to start sharing what makes a Legacy Experience so meaningful.

So, consider this your inside look into what goes on in my creative world—and what truly makes a Legacy Experience so distinctive.

In many ways, a Legacy Experience blends documentary portraiture with lifestyle photography. My goal is always the same: to capture the essence of hardworking individuals while they do what they do every day. I’ve often been told I have a gift for capturing the beauty in the mundane—those honest, everyday moments that reveal the soul of a person’s story.

That love for authenticity however, began long before I ever called it a Legacy Experience. Back in the late 1990s, when I worked for The Winner Advocate, I wrote and photographed a monthly newspaper tabloid that featured farm and ranch families across southern South Dakota. Those stories—honest, heartfelt, and grounded in everyday life—earned me an award from the South Dakota Newspaper Association and planted the seed for what would one day become this work.

At the time, my own father had already passed away, and I didn’t have photos of him working our family dairy farm. That realization stayed with me for decades. The concept of documenting hardworking Americans—of following families through the daily grit and beauty of their lives—never left my mind. I often thought about how meaningful it would have been to have those photographs of my own dad, and how many other families were missing the same pieces of their stories. I wanted others to have that kind of documentation—to see their families and their farms preserved before those moments were gone forever.

I had been photographing professionally since 2001, but in 2020 I took a bold step—niching my studio to focus on Legacy Experiences and high school seniors. It was the perfect way to merge my storytelling roots with my love for documentary photography and to help other families preserve the images and memories I no longer had of my own—even if no one knew what in the world a Legacy Experience was.

Every person, every family, every business owner holds a story worth preserving, and through my lens, I now get to freeze those honest moments in time. Together, they form a legacy that will be remembered for generations.

The Process

Every Legacy Experience begins long before I ever lift my camera. The process is personal, intentional, and built around your story—so every detail matters.

1. Consultation & Planning
We start with a conversation about your story—what you do, the rhythms of your days, and when the most variety happens in your work or family life. This helps determine the best time for me to be there and whether you’d like to include drone imagery, video coverage, or a full documentary-style film. Want a to pull everyone together for family photos? We can do that too!

2. Scheduling Your Session(s)
Once we’ve mapped out what moments matter most, we set the dates. Agriculture families often choose to include more than one season—spring planting, fall harvest, or winter chores—so their legacy is captured across the full story of their year.

3. The Legacy Experience Day
On the day of your experience, I often arrive early to catch the first light of morning and the real start of your day. There’s no set end time—it unfolds naturally. I stay for several hours, and depending on what we’re documenting, I may be there from sunrise to sunset to capture every layer of your story as it happens.

4. The Team & Coverage
The time I spend with you depends on whether it’s just me photographing, or if my son—who serves as my drone photographer and videographer—joins me. You also have the option to include an additional videographer for full documentary films. Imagine the power of having not just images, but video of your loved one telling their own story—in their voice, on their land, in their element.

5. Authentic Documentation
Our goal is always the same: to blend in and let life unfold naturally. We want to document what you’d be doing if we weren’t there—the chores, conversations, laughter, and moments in between. I know that having cameras or even a videographer around might sound invasive at first, but it truly isn’t. Within minutes, most people forget we’re even there. The focus shifts back to your work, your family, and the rhythm of your day—exactly as it should be.

6. The Real-Life Bonus Moments
Of course, sometimes we lend a hand. We’ve been known to help herd cattle, hold tools, or simply offer some comic relief when the day gets long. It’s all part of the experience—we become part of your rhythm while preserving it authentically. Having grown up in agriculture, I understand the ins and outs of the work, and I know how to stay safe, stay out of the way, and never slow you down.

7. Wrapping Up the Day
When we’ve captured enough to tell your story fully, we call it a day. The result is a genuine visual record of who you are and what you’ve built.

8. The Gallery Reveal
Within a few days, you’ll receive a private digital gallery to view how your story has been documented. I know how busy life can be, which is why you can take your time looking through each image at your own pace—whether that’s late at night after chores or over coffee the next morning. That first look is always special—you’ll see your world through new eyes and realize how beautiful your everyday really is. And of course, if you’d like guidance in choosing favorites or designing your album, I’m only a phone call away.

9. Creating Your Heirloom Album
Once you’ve chosen your favorite images, I design your heirloom album with care and intention—something that feels true to your story and the life you’ve built.

10. Multi-Season Experiences
If your Legacy Experience spans multiple seasons, we’ll return to continue documenting as your story evolves. After each session, you’ll select your new favorites to add to your collection.

11. Final Approval & Delivery
Once all sessions are complete, you’ll review and approve your final album design.

12. A Legacy Preserved
You’ll receive your finished heirloom album—a visual legacy to be enjoyed for generations. Each page tells a piece of your story—the kind of images your grandchildren will one day hold and say, “This is where we came from.” Wall art, family portraits, and additional print products can also be included, ensuring your story is preserved beautifully in every form.

If your business needs digital files for marketing or online use, that’s always an easy add-on. After all, what better way to show others what you do than through photographs of you actually doing it?

 The Heart of the Experience

What always stands out to me during each Legacy Experience is how quickly even the most hesitant participants become invested. The husbands, fathers, or grandfathers who were “talked into it” often end up being the ones who linger the longest—sharing stories, cracking jokes, and showing pride in what they’ve built. By midday, they’re smiling, laughing, and, without fail, when we say our goodbyes, they tell me how much they actually enjoyed the entire process.

Then comes my favorite part, the moment when everything comes full circle. Every time I see a family look through their images for the first time, I’m reminded exactly why this work matters so much to me. Growing up on a farm, I know what it’s like to wish I had photos of my dad doing the work he loved. That’s what drives me—to make sure other families have the photographs I never did.

When I photograph agricultural families, those albums often bring strong emotions. It’s not uncommon for there to be quiet tears as they turn the pages and see the life they’ve built reflected back at them. Those moments are sacred, which is why I rarely film them, they’re meant to be felt, not performed. Families often tell me that seeing their images fills them with gratitude and love—because it’s not just photographs they’re looking at, it’s their life captured in its truest form. And now, they can hold their legacies not only in their hands but also in their hearts.

That’s what this is all about: your life, your land, your legacy—captured authentically, remembered always.

If reading this made you think about the stories that deserve to be preserved of your own, I’d love to talk with you. Let’s start planning how to capture your family’s legacy—authentically, beautifully, and for generations to come.
